Dr. John Lewis (1954 – 2020)

It is with the deepest shock that we learned of the recent and untimely passing of our colleague Dr. John Lewis. Aside from being a world renown and well-respected member of the zoo and wildlife veterinary community, John was also a friend. Since the time of the first zoo and wildlife veterinary conference hosted by MVÁÁT and the Budapest Zoo in 2003, John was able to visit Budapest on no less than three occasions (2006, 2011 and 2014) and delighted us with his insightful and educational lectures and workshops. On each occasion, the audience was fascinated by his exceptional knowledge and his down to earth nature and we all remember the standing ovations he received. John was always open and encouraging of all questions, whether they were about working with tigers in the field or his custom-made anesthetic machine, he answered them all and went out of his way ensure that no one was left disappointed.

Our dear friend John was the one to coin the phrase “There are no safe anesthetics, only safe anesthesiologists”, a quote which bears deep roots in the zoo and wildlife veterinary community and is something we all bear in mind during our daily work.

It was an honor to have learned so much from you John and we hope that your legacy will live on through the knowledge you have passed on to us over the years. Rest in peace John, you will be deeply missed!
